Forgiveness is a key to letting go of the past. Forgiveness of both others – and of ourselves. It is really important to forgive ourselves. Until we do, we remain effected by what happened in the past – but unable to change it. We cannot move on in this place. Our lives can become stagnant. Our spirits can feel heavy.
It happened. It was not a loving thing that we did – or that they did. Now we cannot change it. The only thing we can do is to release it. Sometimes that does not feel fair. Sometimes it really is not fair – but it is the very best thing we can do for ourselves.
If it was something we did – we can be more than sorry. We can grieve what we did. We can grieve that we did not act in ways that were loving or honorable. We can grieve that we cannot change it. We can express our sorrow to those we effected.
Grieving the less than wonderful event that happened little by little – letting go of a little more each time – is the way to release the past. And when we release the past, we can move on to better, more wonderful things. We cannot change the past, but we do not have to let it control the future.
