Sometimes when we do not feel like we are being heard, we raise our voice and try to out shout the noise around us.  We try to demand that others listen.  It is important to all of us to feel that we are being heard.  Especially when we have something important to share.

But often others shut down when we get loud.  When we try to force others to listen to us, we can come off as pushy and demanding.  People tune us out.  And if we think about it, we may do the same with others who yell at us – shut them down in our head and really not listen to them.

Next time you have something important to say, try a whisper.  Start with a tone of voice that is caring.  Say it slowly and quietly.  You might just be surprised at how well a whisper can be heard.
