Sometimes it can feel as if our thoughts are running away from us – or going in a million different directions at the same time. When our thoughts race, life can feel chaotic and confusing.
Many of us have a lot to think about every day. Hundreds of thoughts cross our minds. But we can slow it down when we are overthinking.
Take a deep breath and relax for a minute. Let your shoulders drop and move your head around a little to stretch your neck. Reach up for the sky and reach out. Stretch your body a little – even if you are sitting in a chair. Pay attention to what you are doing. Pay attention to your breath.
Let your thoughts focus on a happy memory for a little while. Remember who you were with and where you were. Focus there. This gives your brain a little break.
Then you can come back and list all of the things that have been running through your mind. On paper or just mentally, make a list. Then we can choose to focus on one thing at a time. Often we find that things that are racing through our minds just need to be thought of differently. If there’s nothing you can do about something, then you can adjust your thoughts about it. You can let it go if you want.
