What can we do when our memories haunt us? When every time we think about the past, it hurts?
This happens sometimes and it can feel very painful and overwhelming. Sometimes it is a trauma that we think we cannot help but to think of over and over. Sometimes it is just a lot of smaller events that were less than wonderful that seem to take over our thinking.
We can control our own thoughts. That is the super good news. We can direct and redirect our thoughts. Our thoughts do not control us – we control our thoughts. This may feel very challenging at first, but it is truly doable. We can direct our thoughts.
The next time you notice you are deep in troubling thoughts from past events – pause. Take a couple of deep breaths and just acknowledge what is happening. Remind yourself that these events are in the past – there is nothing we can do about them now except to change our thinking about them. Take a few more deep breaths.
Then replace the thoughts with something loving. It is good to have a loving thought to reference right away. Think of something in the future that you would love to do or see – or a place you would love to be. Focus there. Visualize it as vividly as you can. Stay there for awhile and just breathe. If your thoughts go back to the troubling past events, just gently redirect them back to this loving, uplifting thought. Over and over if you need to. It is very courageous to replace less than loving thoughts with loving thoughts. You are courageous.
Find some loving, happy thoughts that you can turn to whenever you feel overwhelmed by thoughts of things that have happened in the past. Use them whenever you want to raise your mood and vibrations. Remember – we control our thoughts.
